To celebrate GIS Day, the Billings branch of the Montana Association of GIS Professionals (MAGIP) is hosting a one-day Mapathon event for volunteers to collaborate on data collection in Montana. The Billings MAGIP Mapathon will be held in the Billings Public Library computer room on Wednesday November 15 from 2-5pm. Volunteers will focus on creating a statewide publicly available power line feature class by filling in gaps in the OpenStreetMaps dataset. As a friendly competition, each city or region with a hosted event will contend to map the greatest linear feet of power lines with the winning region receiving bragging rights. The competition will last for the entire day and can be actively tracked using the Mapathon dashboard on the results tab. Join us at one of the hosted venues below for networking and pizza or participate virtually. Contact Jeffry Sprock (sprockj@billingsmt.gov) or Luke Ward (lucas.ward@rocky.edu) with questions.
Activity: Cloud in a Bottle Challenge
READ THIS FIRST
Clouds are just droplets of water floating in the air. When several droplets are grouped in the same area, we see that as a cloud. If the droplets are close to the ground instead of way up in the sky, we call it fog. These droplets of water form better if they have something to adhere to (dust, pollen, smoke, other particles).
Today we will test different things to see which is the most effective at making a Cloud (fog) in a Bottle.
I honestly don't know which experiment will give you the best cloud (fog) in a bottle! As you test each one, keep track of how well it works and maybe we can make a video or add it to my website so other people can learn how to make a Cloud in a Bottle!
Experiment 1: Water
Add about 1 cm of water to the bottom of the bottle and close the lid tightly.
Squeeze the bottle like you are trying to crush it's soul.
Quickly release the pressure. Did a "cloud" form (it will look like fog in the bottle).
Open the lid and gently squeeze. Does any vapor come out?
Experiment 2: Warm Water
Rinse out the bottle in the sink.
Add about 1/2 cm of HOT water and 1/2 cm COLD tap water to the bottom of the bottle and close the lid tightly.
Squeeze the bottle like you are trying to crush it's soul.
Quickly release the pressure. Did a "cloud" form (it will look like fog in the bottle).
Open the lid and gently squeeze. Does any vapor come out?
Experiment 3: Warm Water and Smoke
Rinse out the bottle in the sink.
Add about 1/2 cm of HOT water and 1/2 cm COLD tap water to the bottom of the bottle
**Do NOT ever play with the matches! Be responsible!** arefully light a match and let it burn until the wood of the match is burning. Hold the match over the opening of your water bottle and blow it out (don't melt the bottle) so that some of the smoke goes inside the bottle and close the lid tightly.
Place the match in the metal can - DO NOT put it in the garbage or sink or on the table.
Wait until the smoke has been absorbed by the water (you won't see any smoke floating around after a bit)
Squeeze the bottle like you are trying to crush it's soul.
Quickly release the pressure. Did a "cloud" form (it will look like fog in the bottle).
Open the lid and gently squeeze. Does any vapor come out?
Experiment 4: Rubbing Alcohol and Warm Water
***This experiment may ONLY be done at the fume hood! The Rubbing Alcohol is FLAMMABLE so we don't want it near the matches.***
Rinse out the bottle in the sink.
Add about 1/2 cm of HOT water and 1/2 cm COLD tap water to the bottom of the bottle
Go to the fume hood and add 2 sprays of rubbing alcohol to the bottle and close the lid tightly
Squeeze the bottle like you are trying to crush it's soul.
Quickly release the pressure. Did a "cloud" form (it will look like fog in the bottle).
Open the lid and gently squeeze. Does any vapor come out?

Science Olympiad
Informational Meeting: Wednesday, November 1
First Official Meeting for signing up for events: Wednesday, November 15
Meetings every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month (opposite Wednesdays as STEM Society Meetings)
When is the Montana State Competition at MSU in Bozeman? Friday, April 19
Next STEM Society Meeting
Meetings are 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month
Activity: Surface Tension Experiments
Magic Pepper Experiment
Step 1: Fill the plate with water almost to the edge, but ensure that it doesn’t overflow.
Step 2: Sprinkle some black pepper over the water. You’ll notice that the pepper floats on the water. This happens because of buoyancy.
Step 3: Dip your finger in the center of the plate. Did you notice any change? Not much happened, right? You may have just got some pepper flakes stuck to your finger. Imagine that these pepper flakes are germs. If you accidentally touch your face or mouth with hands that are contaminated with germs, it could make you sick.
Step 4: Now, add a drop or two of liquid soap into a small bowl. Ask your child to stick their finger into the bowl and get some soap on their finger.
Step 5: Now, dip your soap-covered finger in the bowl with the water and pepper flakes. See anything different this time? You’ll notice that the pepper flakes (germs) move away to the edge of the plate. Your soapy finger pushed the pepper flakes away to the edge of the plate.
Milk Art - STEAM (STEM with Art!)
Fill plate with enough milk to cover base of the plate (not too much)
Gently place 1 drop of color near the center
Repeat step above with all 4 colors
Dip Q-Tip in soap and touch the center of the milk
Clean your plate in the sink. Clean all milk out of the sink.
Experiment - Using the supplies you used above, alter a variable in the experiment and see what happens!
